Mark Christian G. Bautista, tenor

Born in the Philippines, emerging classical tenor Mark Bautista was a prize winner for several classical vocal competitions in the United Kingdom, including 1st prize at the Festival Singing Competition – Dean and Chadlington Summer Music Festival 2019, “Dvořák Society for Czech and Slovak Music Prize” at the Emmy Destinn Young Singers Award 2019 and the 2nd prize at the Pendine International Voice of the Future competition at the 72nd Llangollen International Musical Eistedfodd 2018 in Wales, UK. He is currently studying with Prof. Susan Waters at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, UK.

He is an alumnus of various award-winning choral groups in the Philippines, including the Coro San Benildo of De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde, and TINING – Ang Koro ng Letran Calamba, led by Mr. Lorenzo Gealogo. As a tenor soloist, he collaborated mainly with the Manila Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the Viva Voce Voice Lab, a young artist opera studio in the Philippines performing classical concerts, operas in events, and theatres under its Artistic Directors, Camille Lopez-Molina and Pablo Molina.

 

Mark’s various stage experiences in Manila, Philippines includes concerts and performances at the Cultural Centre of the Philippines and Ayala Museum. In the UK, he sang in the 2018 production of British Youth Opera “The Rake’s Progress” by Igor Stravinsky, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by Benjamin Britten at the Guildhall School, and the 2019 production of ‘Porgy and Bess’ by George Gershwin for Grange Park Opera in Surrey, UK. Mark debuts the role of ‘Nerone’ in the opera L’Incoronazione di Poppea by Claudio Monteverdi, and “Rodolfo” in a concert version of Puccini’s La Boheme at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. This coming September 2021, he will debut the role in a production with the North Wales Opera Studio.

 

He is also a recipient of several scholarships from The Anne Driver Trust Grant, The Elizabeth Sweeting Award and The Kathleen Trust.

 

Mark is also a Choral Scholar of the St. Leonard’s Church Choir in Streatham, London, where he sings actively as a tenor soloist and ensemble.

 

Mark is a co-founder of The Virtual Opera Studio, a group dedicated to support virtual performances, and offers virtual opportunities for singers around the world.

 

Mark will be joining the Opera Studies Department of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for postgraduate studies this September 2021.
