Audition Notice
North Wales Opera Studio is delighted to welcome back James Black for a series of masterclasses. These masterclasses will take place on the 3rd and 4th December at the Holroyd Community Theatre, Oswestry (SY10 7SZ). These masterclasses will conclude with a concert on the evening of the 4th December.

The cost for participation is £120. A non-refundable deposit of £50 is to be paid by October 31 with the balance due on November 30th.

Born in Canterbury, James Black studied at Magdalen College, Oxford; Peterhouse, Cambridge; and the Royal College of Music. Highlights of his career as a solo countertenor included Oberon / A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Theater Magdeburg; Merione in Gluck’s Telemaco at the Herodes Atticus, Athens; Nireno / Giulio Cesare at the Royal Danish Opera; Bertarido / Rodelinda at the Landestheater Niederbayern, Passau; Andronico / Tamerlano at the Aldeburgh Festival; and creating The Caterpillar in Alexander Knaifel’s Alice in Wonderland at the Dutch National Opera, as well as concerts in Canada, France, Germany, The Netherlands and throughout the UK. He retired from singing in 2003, and now runs James Black Management, specialising in the representation of singers and conductors in opera and concert. A Committee Member of both AEAA (the European Association of Artist Managers) and OMAI (the Opera Managers Association International), his industry insights were published by both Opera and Opera Now during the pandemic lockdown. He has a particular interest in the development of young singers’ careers, and has undertaken coaching sessions for the Royal Northern College of Music, the Pelagian Opera Studio, the Vienna Opera Academy, the Meitar Opera Studio of the Israeli Opera and the Fabbrica of the Rome Opera, as well as the North Wales Opera Studio, to which he is delighted to be returning. He is pleased and proud to have been nominated for a 2022 Southern Enterprises Award.--
